The burden of migraine

Migraine is the third highest cause of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) worldwide. It impacts around 1.2 billion people worldwide, with a global prevalence of approximately 14.3%.2

Migraine affects multiple aspects of a person’s life. In adults with migraine worldwide:*3

• 78%† reported that social activities were affected by their migraine attacks.

• 64%† of patients who experienced ≥ 4 migraine days/month in the last 3 months reported that migraine had affected their private life.

• 60%^ of those in employment missed at least 1 work day/month, with approximately 4.6 work days missed in the last month.

* This study was conducted across 31 countries in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa and the Asia-Pacific region.3

The ‘My Migraine Voice’ Survey (2017) details the significant burden of migraine on healthcare resource utilisation in Ireland.4 The survey (n =131) consisted of people who had ≥ 4 migraine days/month for the previous 3 months, and reported that:

• 71% of participants had visited their GP an average of 3.7 times, in the past 6 months.

• Two-thirds of patients reported having had a brain scan, with a significant proportion of patients saying they had more than one.

• 31% of survey participants had visited the emergency department in the past 12 months, while a total of 23% had been admitted to hospital overnight due to their migraine (average length of stay 2.6 nights).
